The man who died in an horrific car crash in Canberra's south on Friday night after a high-speed chase had a string of previous convictions, ACT police say.
Tim Smith-Brown from Oxley died after he ran a red light and smashed into two other cars on Drakeford Drive, leaving one vehicle wrapped around a power pole and another on its roof.
He died at the scene and another four people were rushed to the Canberra Hospital.
Police alleged Smith-Brown failed to pull over for police and sped off.
Police chased him for a short time before calling off their pursuit.
Today it was revealed that Smith-Brown had a string of previous convictions and should not have been driving when he tried to evade police in the chase that led to the crash.
Smith-Brown had been caught drink driving many times and was disqualified from driving.
He was yet to face charges of reckless dangerous driving, and twice driving whilst disqualified
He was facing a total of eight charges including obstructing an official and several assaults.
Two charges were for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
ACT Chief Police Officer Rudi Lammers said his officers acted correctly when they engaged in a high-speed pursuit with Smith-Brown.
"I'm satisfied that the officers who were pursuing the vehicle followed exactly our guidelines," he said.
Smith-Brown's partner Felicity Jessop, who was in the car at the time and suffered serious injuries, gave birth to the couple's son a day after the crash.
A fundraising website was created for Ms Jessop and her son, which features a photo of them in hospital. Ms Jessop's injuries are clearly evident.
The baby was named Tim after his father.
Ms Jessop was injured in the crash along with a 66-year-old man, 64-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl.
