Ireland's 2014 player of the year Andrew Trimble is set to miss out on World Cup selection when Joe Schmidt's 31-man squad is announced on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Ulster winger missed this year's Six Nations because of a toe injury but had returned to action.

Seven of his Ulster team-mates are believed to have been named, including Darren Cave who will be cover at centre for Robbie Henshaw and Jared Payne.

Tadhg Furlong of Leinster looks likely to be one of five props selected.

Furlong, 22, made his debut as a replacement during the 16-10 defeat by Wales.

Coach Schmidt has opted to name just two scrum-halves in Conor Murray and Eoin Reddan, with first-choice fly-half Johnny Sexton backed up by Paddy Jackson and Ian Madigan.

The seven Ulster players in the World Cup squad are forwards Rory Best, Chris Henry and Iain Henderson and backs Tommy Bowe, Payne, Cave and Jackson.

Wingers Keith Earls and Luke Fitzgerald, who were injured during Saturday's Dublin defeat by Wales, are included the squad.
